Event Details
Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Joey Leone is unable to perform for Second Fridays in March. We are extremely excited to welcome Kirsten Thien & Erik Boyd with their show, Wild Women of the Blues.
Singer-songwriter Thien and guitarist/bassist Boyd share a deep dive into the music and lives of some true pioneers of American music. Thien first discovered the Blues through some of the earliest Blues records ever recorded, by artists like Mamie Smith, Ida Cox, Ma Rainey, Memphis Minnie, and Bessie Smith, to name a few. These great entertainers came out of the vaudeville circuit with unapologetically honest, and sometimes bawdy or controversial, lyrics. They inspired fearlessness and authenticity, while thrilling crowds across America.
This program focuses on select recordings and Blues women from the 1920s-1940s, and will also touch upon their influence on the next generations of Blues women, such as Billie Holiday, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, and Thien herself. Enjoy original music, too!
